Portsmouth is a City located in the county of Hampshire on the southern coast of England in the South East region. It is nicknamed Pompey as are the cities football team Portsmouth FC. The administrative unit itself forms part of the wider Portsmouth conurbation, with an estimated 442,252 residents within the city boundaries, making it the 11th largest urban area in England. Records from the 2001 census show it was the only city in England with a greater population density than London as a whole, although many of London's boroughs, 33 in total individually have a much greater density.
A significant naval port for centuries, Portsmouth is home to the world's oldest dry dock still in use and home to many famous ships, which includes Nelson's famous flagship HMS Victory. Also on the sea, visit Clarence Pier Southsea which is a tourist attraction full of rides and amusements.
Transport links by roads to Portsmouth include the the M275, A3 (London Road) and A2030 (Eastern Road). The M27 has a junction connecting to the M275 into Portsmouth. The A27 has a westbound exit onto the A3 (London Road) and a junction onto the A2030 (Eastern Road). The A3(M) is small part of motorway which runs from Bedhampton north to Horndean. It city and county are also home to some well known names in sport including Portsmouth FC in football and Hampshire County Cricket club. The University of Portsmouth is home to some 20,000 students in term time.
