Cumbria - the county has an approximate population of 499,000 and was formed in 1974 after the passage of the Local Government Act 1972. The county consists of six districts including Allerdale, Barrow-in-Furness Borough, Copeland, Eden, Lake District and South Lakeland.
The county is located in North West England and lies to the west of the Irish Sea, to the south by Lancashire, to the southeast of North Yorkshire, and to the east of County Durham and Northumberland. Scotland lies directly to the north.
Mostly a rural county, Cumbria is home to the Lake District National Park which is considered one of the most beautiful areas of the United Kingdom by many. The area has provided inspiration for generations of British and foreign artists, writers, explorers, and musicians such as Wordsworth, Ruskin, Potter and Barrow. Much of the county is mountainous, with the highest point of the county and England being Scafell Pike at 978m, world famous Consiton Old Man at 804m the 7th highest landmass in England. All the territory in England that is over 3,000 feet above sea level is in located Cumbria.
