Bristol is a City located in the South West region of England, 105 miles West of London. Bristol has an approximate population of 400,000 and metropolitan (surrounding areas) area of 550,000 and is England's sixth, and the UK's ninth, most populated city. The city received a royal charter in 1155 and was granted county status in 1373. Bristol borders on the unitary districts of Bath and North East Somerset (BANES), North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, between the cities of Bath, Gloucester and Newport, and has a coastline on the estuary of the River Severn which flows into the Bristol Channel.

The South West Region is geographically the largest region in England. It contains the counties of Cornwall, Devon, (Wessex Region covers) Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire and the City of Bristol. John Cabot sailed from Bristol and became the first European known to set foot on mainland America in 1497. A replica of his ship, The Matthew, is open to visitors in Bristol Harbour. Brunel designed the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which carries traffic 300ft above the Avon Gorge.
